Grand Rapids Professional Photographer | Why professional photography is a luxury, not a necessity

A lot of professional photographers get a lot of inquiries that bawlk at their prices. We always see a lot of post that ask for “affordable photographers” or “photographers that don’t cost an arm and a leg.” I am here to break the news and tell you…professional photography is a luxury, not a necessity. You can’t require and experienced, high quality photographer that is “affordable.”

1: Everyone’s affordability is different and

2: Experienced, high quality photographers deserved to be appreciated and paid for their services, just like any other job.

Professional photography is often considered a luxury rather than a necessity for several reasons:

1. Cost: Professional photography can be expensive, with prices that are often higher, and there for, an experience that needs to be planned and thought out. Most of my clients have been saving for their custom luxury experience.

2. Availability: Professional photographers are typically booked out for months because they take on only a limited amount of clients. Most clients get 3 sessions from a photographer. 1: the consultation. Really discovering the needs of the client. 2: the session itself, and 3: The reveal appointment where images are selected from the client. At 6 clients a month, that is equivalent to 18 appointments spots in that month. Limiting clients allows the photographer to really connect with their client and give them that 1:1 custom experience you can’t find from a “cheap” photographer.

3. Technology: Advances in technology have made it easier for people to take high-quality photos with their smartphones or point-and-shoot cameras. This has made it less necessary for some people to hire a professional photographer, as they can take their own photos that are of sufficient quality for their needs if you are unable to pay a professional photographer. Professional photographers spend thousands of dollars on their camera and thousands more on lenses. Lots of money goes into really mastering the craft, and being good at it! Professional photographers should be considered luxury and treated as such. I recommend saving for the professional service, and in the mean time, take some candids or family photos with your phone or point and shoot camera while you save!

4. Perception: Some people may view professional photography as a luxury rather than a necessity, especially if they do not place a high value on photography as an art form or means of preserving memories. Clients who value the service and really want to capture some amazing memories and get those memories printed professionally and put up on their walls, will invest in their photographer. Everyone finds value in different things, and thats ok! But it is not ok to undervalue photographers because you don’t find value in spending good money on the trade.

5. Alternative Options: There are alternative options available for those who cannot afford or access professional photography services, such as DIY photography or finding someone who is wanting to learn.

Overall, professional photography is often considered a luxury rather than a necessity due to its cost, availability, advances in technology, perception, and alternative options. While professional photography can provide high-quality images and a unique perspective, it may not be a priority or feasible for everyone.
